Although Hong Kong covers a small
land area, its subtropical climate nourishes a rich and diversified insect
fauna. Over 5,000 species of insects have been recorded locally, and many
of them are truly beautiful and attractive. A number of which, such as
the Yellow-spotted Emerald, are endemic. In addition,
the stamps are printed in special
fine screen that the detail feature and colour of insects can be clearly
shown. Moreover, the name of insects were embedded in the stamps by micro-print
which adds to their collection value.
This set of special stamps depicts
four species of insect found in Hong Kong. Yellow-spotted Emerald
(Macromidia ellenae Wilson),this medium-sized forest dragonfly has distinctive
yellow spots on its thorax. It is a predatory insect found in unpolluted
forest streams in Pat Sin Leng. It is endemic to Hong Kong.
